Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32
We know the story about Prodigal Son so well. We even know its different titles, the story of the Prodigal Father and the story of the Prodigal Older Son. Since we are familiar with all kinds of variations and interpretations, we tend to approach it as if we already know it. As I sat down to reflect on this passage, I prayed to the Holy Spirit for new insight.
This time as I read the passage I noticed the two groups of people; one group drew near to listen to Jesus, and the other group was filled with complaints. From a distance, the complainers said, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
We can see two major movements taking place in the Gospel. The younger son “came to his senses” and made the decision to move closer to his father, and the father runs toward him as soon as he appears on the horizon. In the second movement, the older son stays at a distance and makes a decision to move away from the festivities and joy.
What has to happen in order for me to come to my senses and see the reality of my life for what it is?
What do I do with such a generous gift of freedom given by the Father?
Is my hunger drawing me towards right relationship with Jesus and the Father, or do I want to be right?
