Matthew 22:1-14
This Sunday’s gospel reminds us about all that God offers and the choices we have in response. God invites us to participate in the great banquet, one that is beyond compare. But we have a choice in how we respond. Every invitation comes with an RSVP. The real question for each of us is, “How will I respond?”
It is obvious that God wants to fill the banquet and makes every effort to do so, but not all who are invited are as eager to attend. Perhaps it is the time of the banquet, the expectations for attending – such as attire – perhaps it is simply apathy on the part of the invitee. We are not told the reasons for all who refuse the invitation; we do know that God is relentless in his efforts to fill the banquet.
God constantly seeks our presence, but we always have a choice; God’s love is never forced upon us. I think, perhaps, the last line of the gospel could be changed to read: “Many are invited, but few have chosen."
