Gospel: John 19:20-23
If you were asked to tell the story of how the promised Holy Spirit was given to Jesus’ followers after His resurrection, most people would probably describe the events of the day of Pentecost: a strong, driving wind, tongues of fire and bold proclamations by once fearful apostles.
However, the Gospel of John records Jesus imparting the Holy Spirit to the apostles on the same day of His resurrection when he appears to them, stands before them, and says: “Peace be with you!” He proceeds to show them his wounded hands and side; an act of complete openness and vulnerability. Then he simply breathes on them and says: “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
In this account, there are no crowds, no big visible signs of power and presence or might, but a beautiful intimate moment that would take the rest of their lifetimes to fully comprehend. Pope Leo XIV, in his first address to the people gathered in St. Peter’s Square describes this peace of the risen Christ as one that is, “unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering. A peace that comes from God, the God who loves us all, unconditionally.”
So how will the Holy Spirit come to you today? In clear and bold signs or in the still, small voice of God, as close to us as our very breath? However the Spirit chooses to manifest Himself, simply be ready to welcome Him and enter the journey!
