15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Luke 10:25-37

There are all kinds of people who preach about how we are to care for everyone and love our neighbor as we love ourselves, but when we meet someone who actually does it, we truly have to take a step back in awe. As we consider the Samaritan who came to the aid of the man who fell victim to the robbers, let’s consider his series of actions.

First, the Samaritan, upon encountering the man, is “moved with compassion.” This disposition comes from someone who is self-aware and who understands human suffering. Moved by this sense of compassion, he approaches the victim. The Samaritan is not repulsed or repelled, nor does he try to “un-see” the man and avoid getting involved. The Samaritan man rolls up his sleeves, and from his own supply, takes wine and oil and pours them over the victim’s wounds and then bandages them. We all have wounds, some are more visible than others, but it is one part of the human condition that truly unites us. Being able to touch another’s woundedness with healing balm and tenderness is perhaps one of the greatest acts of care we can offer.

Next, the Gospel tells us that the Samaritan lifted the victim up on his own animal and took him to an inn. Caring is lifting up someone, whether by meeting someone’s physical need or by our kind words, a listening ear or a simple smile. It means letting another into our lives and practicing hospitality of heart.

The Samaritan’s final act of care is to encourage another person, this time, the inn-keeper, to widen the circle of connection so that the victim experiences the power of community. This one powerful parable about caring can serve as a tremendous lesson for those with eyes to see and ears to hear. Now, Jesus’ invitation is addressed to us: "Go and do likewise."
