If you’ve ever had the blessing of journeying with someone through a terminal illness, you know the power of the unshakeable spirit upon which that person’s life is built. A true pilgrim on a journey knows that nothing in this world is secure and lasting, yet they fully appreciate the moments of meaning and glimpses of God that come when one can be still in the midst of the raging storm. I have accompanied a few people on this kind of journey, and because of it, I know and believe that it’s only in these kinds of vulnerable times that one witnesses the truth of what is eternal.
This Sunday’s Gospel from Saint Luke reminds us that the things of this world are passing, and that what we often cling to can be taken away in the blink of an eye. Those who fear change and upheaval try desperately to hold on to their security, and yet God invites us into the great “letting go.” Even though letting go is frightening, holding on will not permit us to have the freedom to embrace the good things that are yet to come.
As we come to the end of this liturgical year and our world seems to be spinning out of control, may we be reminded that we need not fear what the future holds because we know the One who holds our future! Can I get an “Amen?”
