Gospel: Luke 2:29-32
“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”
Today we celebrate the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple by Mary and Joseph. The event marks the Messiah entering His Temple. The elderly Simeon, a “righteous and devout” man, had been waiting for this moment his entire life. Anna, too, devoted her widowhood to prayer and anticipation of this moment. Waiting can be frustrating, but Anna’s and Simeon’s patience was rewarded. The experience of waiting was worth it. They were in the right place at the right time.
Simeon was a humble and faith-filled man. His reaction to holding His Lord and Savior was ecstasy: “He is the Messiah. I’ve seen Him. I’ve held Him in my arms. My purpose in life now is fulfilled. I am ready to die.” What a statement of faith!
Like all of us, Simeon worked hard during his life and had many ordinary experiences, desires, and aspirations. For him to say that he was now ready to “go in peace” means that this event was the pinnacle of his life. Simeon’s encounter with Jesus is a reminder that we are never too old to play a role in God’s plan.
The example of Simeon reveals what we should strive for. In life we will encounter Christ in different circumstances, and we must be vigilant.
Today, take some time to reflect on your part in God’s plan. Listen, anticipate, and be a person of faith as that plan unfolds so that you, too, may one day rejoice and “go in peace” confident that your purpose in life has been fulfilled. God has a perfect plan for each of us that He will reveal in His time. Be alert! Don’t miss your mission.
