Gospel: Luke 6:39-45
Today’s Gospel calls to mind a statement by Pope Francis, “Who am I to judge?” We are all sinners with beams in our eyes. Jesus points out our blindness in a different passage in the story of the woman caught in adultery. In the entire group of accusers, there was not a single person to cast a stone. A priest friend would frequently say, “We are all imperfect people living in an imperfect world, trying to be perfect.” Not easy! We are not alone traveling this imperfect journey with our imperfect companions.” However, don’t we sometimes think that we are perfect?
On Wednesday we begin the Season of Lent, a time set apart for prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Fasting can take many forms, including fasting from judging. Another priest friend would remind his parish family that when they point a finger at someone, three fingers point back at them. Try it! So often we are blind to our own faults and sin.
May this Lent be a time of spiritual growth for each of us. May we learn what it means to be merciful and to treat others as God treats us with compassion and nonjudgment.
Blessings!
