Gospel Reflection: January 20, 2019 - 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 19, 2019

JN 2:1-11

It amazes me how a mother can see potential for a future occupation in her child or young person even before they see it themselves. I remember my mom telling me in high school that I would be good at working with computers. I told her that I didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk and working on a computer all day. This was back in the day when computers took up a whole room and needed punch cards to run the programs. It sounded way too dull and boring! After a few twists and turns at various work environments, I find myself today sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Life is far from being dull and boring!

In today’s gospel we find Jesus with his mother and friends at a wedding in Cana. Everyone is having a great time and then the wine runs out. Mary who believes her son can do great things, goes to Jesus to tell him that there is no more wine. Jesus says to her that his time hasn’t come yet. But regardless of his hesitation, Mary tells the waiter to do as her son says. In the end Jesus turns the water into wine, which is the best wine the guests have tasted.

Maybe it’s God’s gift to mothers (or others) to see potential in someone else. With simple nudges or affirmations, these insightful persons nurture the seeds already within, and push to growth the potential God has planned for them. Are you being called to support that God-given potential in others?
