Another week has come and gone. For most of us, it has been a full one. I have finished the week with our students from the Newman Association at Allegheny College and participated in our Provincial Chapter, as well as drove back to Philly avoiding all the snow storms. God is Good!
Last week, we reflected on some of the thoughts from the Allegheny College students but I couldn’t help but think of them when I heard the first reading this weekend, the call of Samuel. Like Samuel, the students heard the call to respond to God and, in their case, it was through service, sharing and simple laughter. The call to this week of service had its different stages of involvement. Like Samuel, they were being called, but by whom? They questioned and then finally agreed to give up their last week of vacation to answer God’s call. As all of them shared, during our Holy Hour together on their last evening, their lives would never be the same. The service, sharing and being with the Sisters had an effect on who they were becoming. Thanks for being with us, students, you are a blessing to us here is Des Plaines!
How can you relate to Samuel in your own life? What is God calling you to? Do you know his voice or are there distractions that perhaps delay your response to his call? Can you go through the stages of accepting what God may be asking of you at this time? Like Samuel, we may have to get to the point of saying, “Here I am Lord, I come to do your will!” Like the students who had to give up something precious to participate in the week, we too may have to give up some things to be ready to say, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”
This time of winter is a great time for reflection, short days and long cold nights (depending on where you live) allow us more reflection time. How do you see yourself in this story? If not Samuel, perhaps you are Eli who is the mentor and support of Samuel. Have I taken the time to mentor or encourage someone in need? Have I helped them to realize that it is the Lord calling them? Lots to think about and challenge us. I pray that you take the great and faithful example of the Allegheny College students who heard God’s call and responded, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”
