JN 20:19-31
The disciples have locked themselves in a room because they were worried about the events of Good Friday. They were confused and upset about their future. We can all identify with these feelings. Confusion over how the future will unfold often cause anxiety and feelings of uncertainty and fear. However, their locked door and their confused hearts will NOT keep the Risen Lord away. Jesus understands and sympathizes with his friends and disciples. Jesus brings them His PEACE and comfort, a PEACE which is beyond our understanding. Almost instantly upon seeing their LORD, the disciples are filled with a renewed strength, courage and JOY. Jesus’ peace is “shalom.” It means “be calm; be well; and be happy in mind and body.” Our challenge as we celebrate the octave of Easter is to take the peace which Jesus offers us and bring it to all those with whom we come in contact in our homes, workplaces and neighborhoods. Confusion, fear and worry are like being behind a locked door; but the resurrected Jesus unlocks that door forever. We have experienced the Risen Lord in His Word and Sacraments. With the graces we receive we have the power to fill this world with goodness, hope and love. Go forth to the Galilees of this world the way Jesus went forth to Galilee on Easter morning. Be His hands, feet, voice and heart and proclaim His Risen life and victory EVERYWHERE!
