Dec. 11: Wednesday Reflection

December 11, 2019

Dear Friends,

Happy second week of Advent! I pray that you had some time during the week to be with Joseph and ask God to do for you what you need most. This week Joseph invites us to make a pilgrimage through his interior life.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight; in all your ways acknowledge to him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

This quote from Proverbs helps us to begin to understand Joseph’s interior life. Joseph truly trusted the Lord. There were times because of his humanity that there were concerns and doubts, but his heart was certainly filled with love, awe, humility, and trust. Joseph deeply loved Mary and was able to receive her into his life despite the unusual circumstances. Joseph was coming to the knowledge of the fact that he was the man who was to be husband to Mary and parent to Jesus. He was to provide, protect, love them with his whole heart. Joseph allowed himself to be brought into the depth of Mary’s purity and holiness. Because of this close relationship, Joseph was able to love Mary with heroic virtue. Mary was able to call forth the holiness of Joseph.

Joseph is a great model for us. In his humanity, greatness was able to be brought forth. There is a saint inside of each of us. There is greatness inside of you. The question is: “Will you allow God to call forth that saint? Will you let God call forth the greatness out of you?”

Joseph could do it as his prayer life was solid and he trusted with his whole heart the relationship he had with God. What about you and me? I am sure that there are times in your life when you have felt betrayed, ignored, dismissed or challenged. Staying faithful can be hard, even discouraging but like Joseph we need to remember that God is always with us. He will never leave us. Look to those who help you continue to grow in the spirit of trust and holiness. Like Mary they can call forth the greatness that is within. Continue to pray this week and ask God to work wonders in your life, all things are possible. Continue to prepare during this busy time for the coming of Jesus.

This week some of these readings may prove helpful. Blessings, and may your week be filled with thoughts of the coming of the person of Jesus.
