Two years ago, this quote came across my desk and just now found its way back to me through a memory of a past reflection. It goes like this: “Begin to weave and God will give you the thread” (German proverb).
It resonates with me today in a different way than it did two years ago. Like two years ago, we are in the Easter season and the readings from the Acts of the Apostles are familiar to us, but our present world situation with the pandemic puts a different spin on how we look at the quote and the readings.
When we began weaving back in January 2020, who would have thought we would be in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic in April? How do we continue to weave and know that the thread will be supplied? The early Christians knew how to do it -- they trusted in the Lord and followed his way. They risked everything to follow and witness this new way of life. Coming together they put their faith into action by sharing what they had with their local faith-filled communities.
They were on fire and had no intentions of returning to their former ways of living. They had been inspired by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. For them, the thread would always be supplied by God. They didn’t have an easy time of living the new life. There were persecutions, challenges, and fear. Yet together they were able to strengthen each other, no matter what.
Are we not experiencing some of the same emotions and situations today? Sheltering-in-place has created isolation for some. For many, there has been a sense of loss -- a job, a loved one, or a sense of security. How do we continue to trust that God will supply the thread needed to work our weaving? If anything, we must admit our lives have changed and, perhaps, slowed down, giving us different opportunities we may not have been aware of before because we were too busy. I suggest that we use the time wisely and continue to weave, knowing that the thread will continue to be supplied -- it just may be a different color than we imagined.
My prayer is that you may continue to keep weaving your life story and trust that God is always with us. Let us be grateful for the thread!
