A statement from our Provincial Superior regarding the December 2017 vehicle accident in Philadelphia involving four Sisters

March 2, 2018

Dear Friends of Nazareth,

On March 1, the media began reporting stories regarding charges that have been filed against the young man who drove the other car in the December 2017 accident in Philadelphia involving four Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

During this difficult time, we continue our commitment to creating communities of love and hope which celebrate the oneness of the human family. The policies and mission of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth are based on the following values:

  • We believe all life is sacred and exists in relationship; in particular, we believe family life to be sacred.
  • We maintain that the family perspective is paramount to our life and ministry. We reach out to all others as family among families, embracing the needs of all families as our own.
  • We serve by taking time in the ordinary circumstances of daily life for anyone, anywhere, and at any time reverencing the God-given dignity of every person.
  • We recognize all as our brothers and sisters, celebrating the oneness of the human family.
  • We uphold the integrity of every individual; we witness to inclusivity, respecting the gift of diversity as we strive toward unity.
  • We live and minister in the hope that all families might become the meeting place of God and humanity.

Sisters Boguslawa, Mary Anthony, Regina, and John, the four Sisters injured in the December 2017 accident, have kindly asked that their privacy continue to be respected and that details regarding their recovery not be released so that they may focus on their continued healing. The Sisters express their gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and well-wishes that have arrived from around the world.

Throughout this legal process, we would also like to ask for prayers for the other driver and his family and for the legal teams involved in the case. We ask for God to guide their hearts, their minds, and their actions so the best interest of all concerned may be served with dignity and integrity.
