Gospel Reflection: Aug. 23, 2020 – 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 22, 2020

MT 16:13-20

Jesus poses the question: “Who do you say that I am?” in today’s Gospel. Peter answered “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Indeed Jesus is the Son of God. His ministry is living, active, grace-filled and also, challenging for all the ages.

This same question is presented to each one of us on this Sunday. Do we see Jesus as the Good Shepherd, the Prince of Peace, Emmanuel – God with Us, our brother, our friend, Jesus of Nazareth, Living Water, the Bread of Life, the Resurrection and the Life, the Light of the World or another name that speaks to us personally or as a community?

However we see Jesus, in whatever ways we enter into a life-giving relationship with Him, through the people we encounter , in the events of each day, in the challenges of His commission to us -- we are sharers of the Good News of Who Jesus is to us, to our family and friends, to our neighbor, to the poor and to this world of ours, so in need of His presence and healing touch.

We must answer the question of today’s Gospel each day we wake up and breath in the air of the world God made. This answer defines our very being: Who is Jesus to me, to us, to others? His Gospel and Mission take root in the answers we all give. Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the wisdom of Your Word and help us remember that YOU ARE WISDOM, STRENGTH and GRACE!
