The Bread of Life discourse in the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel is a prayer of Jesus for unity among his disciples with many references to Moses, the Passover, manna, God’s providence, and the sacred gift of the Eucharist. The account of the miracle which fed the multitudes is found in all four Gospels and emphasizes God’s eternal desire to provide for all living things, thus teaching a very direct message about Jesus’ identity and mission.
God’s transforming power among all of us is evident in this event, which shows Jesus as the one sent by God to reveal the LOVE and limitless GIVING of the Trinity to each and every person. Each day of our lives, God provides for our individual and communal needs; and the challenge is ever in front of us to be willing to give of ourselves so that others, in turn, may be fed in His name. How will each of us answer the CALL today to be the transforming power of Jesus in the life of another person, another cherished disciple of the Lord?
