Gospel Reflection: February 26, 2023 - First Sunday of Lent

February 25, 2023

Matthew 4:1-11

If you are going to do battle with the devil, you better be led by the Spirit!

As I reflect on today's Gospel, I realize how much the Holy Spirit is the protagonist, the One leading the dance, the One drawing Jesus into the depths. It is truly the same Holy Spirit Who works behind the scenes during Lent, calling us to transformation, conversion, and holiness.

Sometimes, we think the work of Lent is all up to us. We try to enhance our prayer life, fast from pleasurable things, give up unhealthy habits, and be more generous to those in need. Truth be told, all of these things are void if not for the Holy Spirit infusing them and us with His gifts of grace.

This Lent, let the Spirit lead! Here are a few things you can do to catch the Spirit's fire:

  • Be reconciled to God, especially through the Sacraments.
  • Meditate on God's Word.
  • Deny ungodliness and cultivate Godliness.
  • Avoid tempting situations (near occasions of sin, as we used to say!)
  • Be transparent to God and others…keep it REAL!

Here's to an amazing Lenten journey!
