Acts 1:1-11
I often wonder what the apostles felt as they spent those last few minutes with Jesus, as he promised them the power of the Holy Spirit and told them to be his witness to the ends of the earth. They stood there looking intently at the sky until two men dressed in white asked why they were standing there and looking up. Was it sadness, fear or were they just overwhelmed?
Needless to say, it was a tall order to carry his message to the ends of the earth and be witnesses (after all things didn’t end up well for him the Jewish authorities). But like the apostles, we often need to be reminded to stop standing still and wondering. We need to roll up our spiritual sleeves and get on with God’s work. There’s plenty to do. St, Paul reminds us to receive the call with humility, gentleness, patience, bearing one another’s burdens and to strive for unity and peace. (Ephesians 4:2) I guess all we have to do is look to Christ, trust and respond using the gifts he gave each of us.
