by Liz Fairchild, former Holy Family Service Corps volunteer
Born to poverty and strife
They left to find a better life
They traveled far across the sea
To better live as family
A step away from freedoms land
Then heart was torn by heavy hands
You a boy of just four years
Never will I forget your tears
Your face stained with trace of tears
As your mother disappears
You called for me all through the night
I lost the battle despite my fight
Now miles from you, I sit in tears
Unable to contain your fears
Until the day we reunite
God be with you through the night
Liz Fairchild, along with fellow volunteer Mathew Jury, recently completed a one-year service program with the Holy Family Service Corps (HFSC). Liz was inspired to compose this poem after experiencing our sisters’ work with immigrants, refugees and migrants.
Liz is currently working in childcare in Minnesota and plans to continue writing.
HFSC is a collaborative program between the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth and Holy Family Institute that was created to give volunteers a unique opportunity for simple communal living, service and faith-building opportunities.
