"The Glory of Nazareth" - a poem by Sr. Rosarita Liebchen

August 24, 2018

The Glory of Nazareth

Nowogrodek, hallowed is the ground, the holy place where
Offerings were made upon a summer’s morn.

Generous, selfless, joyous gifts,
Rendered as a testament of love, both human and divine, that
Enriched and consoled those most desperate and in need.
As rain falling upon parched and barren fields makes
The meadows green with expectation and the hope of spring,
Each drop of mortal blood that drenched the forest floor
Restored faith in the goodness of the human spirit graced by God.

Light shone that hour in a world grown dark with grim despair;
Order and peace would come to troubled lives and hearts once more as
Victorious you fell in mock defeat, eleven flames enkindling life anew.
Ever will our grateful and ennobled hearts raise joyous praise to you!

This acrostic poem was composed by Sr. Rosarita Liebchen, CSFN, in 1998, in honor of the Martyred Sisters of Nowogrodek. An acrostic poem is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase. Typically, the first letters of a line are used. In "The Glory of Nazareth," the first letter of each line spells: "NO GREATER LOVE."
