Gospel Reflection: September 1, 2024 – 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
In Mark’s gospel we are presented with a list of obligations which the Jews of Jesus’ time were required to observe. Everyday life was directed by a laundry list of miniscule requirements. These obligations far exceeded those expected of a respectable person in society, such as avoiding destroying another’s reputation, their belongs, their livelihood and even their life. There was the misconception that more is better. Jewish society believed that increasing one’s obligations would create a path to advancing in holiness.
It was easy to become entangled in the letter of the law or tiny details while overlooking the spirit of the law. In our personal journey toward holiness, we need to ask ourselves, “what is my motivation?” Ultimately, rules, customs, laws and commandments should bring us closer to God and make us more loving toward others. If not, we need to ask God to touch our heart and make us more open to loving Him and the people He has placed in our lives.
Blessings,
