Gospel Reflection: October 20, 2024 – 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 20, 2024

I came not to be served but to serve!

GospelMark 10:35-45

“At your service”, a phrase we may not hear too often anymore but one that is needed in today's times. Today, our society has so much difficulty bearing the pain of accidents, deaths, destruction from bad weather and fires where people lose everything. But not all is lost, kindness, charity, and service seem to abound, and help is being given to strangers who are desperately in need.

Jesus taught us, “I came to serve and not be served.” (Matthew 20:28) We might say, “but He is God and has the power to be of service in times of tragedy in miraculous ways.” True. Yet, His only expectation of us is that we do what we CAN do. Most of the time we say we will pray for the situation or person.

However, if we take time to examen it, we will find that we can always give a helping hand in some way: a smile, a listening ear, holding someone while they are crying, helping clean up after a storm, hurricane or other natural disasters that cause fear, loss of possessions, life, or other sad situations.

Do you know anyone who fits this description? I am certain you can name several people. Not only those we hear or read about, but people you work with or even your family members. Does anyone need your ‘service’ now?

Take time to think of how you can be of service to others today.
