1st Sunday of Advent
Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36
The familiar message of the Advent Season is the call of John the Baptist, “Prepare the way of the Lord!” This message slowly reaches a crescendo during the next four weeks as Christmas approaches. Advent, while regarded as a penitential season, is also full of hope and expectation.
Today’s readings describe frightening and terrible signs that precede the Lord’s coming: the powers of heaven are shaken, natural disasters abound, and the world is in chaos and disarray. Yet, we are reminded to be vigilant and trusting so that we become neither complacent nor frightened.
Jesus was born in history over 2000 years ago, but He is returning. This is a reason to be hopeful despite what we hear and see in the news. These contemporary events will test our resolve, but Advent gives us time to prepare for the Second Coming.
Although times may seem bleak and unsettled, there is more than meets the eye. Throughout the four Gospels, Jesus reminds us repeatedly to not be afraid. This is especially true regarding those circumstances over which we have no control.
As we enter this season of hope and expectation let us place our cares on Him because He cares for us.
