Sister M. Evangeline Sullivan (1943 - 2026)

On February 3, 1943, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Norristown, PA, Margaret Mary and Maurice Sullivan welcomed their fourth child. Following her mother’s remarriage, the family grew to seven children, and she became a loving older sister to three new siblings.

To assist her large family, Peggy, as her family called her, began babysitting. It was here that she encountered the Catholic faith. Through the Centrella family and Father Larkin at Visitation BVM Parish, she entered the Catholic Church.

The year 1961 was one of extraordinary blessings for Margaret Mary. She made her first confession on May 13, received Baptism on May 14, and First Communion on May 15. Following her high school graduation and Confirmation on June 12, she responded to God’s call and entered the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth as a postulant on September 8. A profound joy and peace filled her heart.

Margaret Mary entered the novitiate in March of 1962, receiving the name Sister Mary Evangeline, and on August 12, 1964, professed her first vows. On August 11, 1969, she made her perpetual profession, adding to her name the mystery, the Eucharist.

Sister Evangeline loved helping form the hearts and minds of little ones. With her nurturing personality and caring heart, she taught at Queen of Peace Convent and School in Ardsley, PA (1964-1970), St. Gregory School in Plantation, Florida (1983–1989), and Academia del Carmen in Carolina, Puerto Rico. She cared for children with little or no family at St. Mary’s Villa for Children in Ambler (1970–1983). Later, God called her to the Philippine mission (1995–2000), where, as Vocation Director, she traveled to the various islands by often challenging, life-threatening means.

Returning to Philadelphia in 2000, Sister Evangeline became the Administrator at Mount Nazareth. Never one to serve in half measures, Sister Evangeline gave herself fully to this new ministry to her Sisters.

Recognizing her genuine love for them, the Sisters elected her as superior (2009-2015) (2018-2020). Her deep love for her Sisters inspired initiatives to ensure no Sister was forgotten, encouraging personal visits and nighttime vigils for those nearing death. She who began this work of mercy would eventually become the recipient of that care.

On the morning of June 25, 2026, Sister Evangeline left Mount Nazareth to join her Eucharistic Lord. The bond that began over 65 years ago was now brought to fulfillment.

May you rest in peace, dear Sister Evangeline!
