14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

In today’s Gospel, we are encouraged to pray for more laborers for the Kingdom. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done in spreading the Gospel and there is a scarcity of workers. Jesus hand-picked His “labor force.” Disciples come from all walks of life. In an episode during an early season of The Chosen, Jesus not only sends the disciples out two by two on a mission to preach and heal, but He selected the missionary pairs based on their abilities and talents and so they could support each other in the mission. Often the two disciples had opposite personalities. This challenged them to grow in their perspectives and nudge them from their comfort zones. He gave them practical advice so that they could focus on the task at hand – travel lightly and be grateful for whatever food and drink was provided. The Kingdom isn’t about eating, drinking, or remaining in our comfort zone.

True disciples trust in God’s Providence. When I falter, I am reminded of the encounter between Jesus and Little James, also from The Chosen. James struggles with being called to heal and preach despite his mobility issues. Jesus reminds him that the work is God’s, not his. The power of God is impressive when we let Him act through our weakness.

As we now journey in “ordinary time” let us make it “extraordinary.” May we continue to live in the hope and joy of the Resurrection and share it with others.

God Bless!
