Gospel: Luke 14:25-33
In today’s Gospel, Jesus enumerates the cost of discipleship. Before undertaking any project, we would normally assess what resources are needed and whether we have sufficient funds to bring the venture to completion. The project we are undertaking here is “the Kingdom of God.” The level of commitment required is EVERYTHING. It’s a total commitment to a new way of life. We are presented with changing priorities that may put us in conflict with our colleagues and loved ones.
A common denominator in the lives of saints is that they gave up ambition, fame, and fortune in exchange for a Christ-centered and other-centered life and used their talents for the Kingdom. Their “crosses” were unique to them. Some were mocked and mistreated. One of the heaviest crosses is not necessarily illness or poverty but to be misunderstood or even disowned by family. Jesus showed a love that went beyond the Cross, trusting in His Father’s care. Are we willing to lose all to trust the Father’s care? The cost of discipleship is not cheap.
God Bless!
