This past weekend, I had the wonderful experience of speaking to families at St. Joseph’s Parish in Charlton. Part of the presentation was on developing a relationship with Jesus and how I do this in my family life. We had a lively session, and I thought I would share some of our findings with you. With all that is going on in our world today, it is good to remember that love of God fuels our love for our neighbor.
Football season is here, and although I don’t know a lot about it, I asked our group who they thought was the most important player on the team. As I suspected, they said the Quarterback. I was happy to tell them that I thought it was those who did the blocking – offensive linemen and fullbacks. I asked them to look at what blocks us from developing a deeper relationship with God, and as a result, with one another. Here are some of the things we came up with.
Busyness, self-reliance, guilt, fear, doubt, lack of prayer, these are some of the things that hold us back from our relationship with God. Some of the things that block our relationship with people are self-centeredness, resentment, lack of communication, judgements, and fear of being vulnerable. I am sure if you look at the list, you can pick out a few of the blockers that tackle your life and everyday experiences.
What is really important is that we recognize them for what they are and try to avoid getting HIT! Because of our human condition, we fail so many times, but the good thing is we can get up and start all over again. God is so forgiving – more than we can ever imagine. He’s waiting with open arms, letting us know we are loved. Recently, I came across this quote: “Mosaics are made from broken pieces, but they’re still a work of art. And so are YOU!” We may be broken, but when healed and put back together, we are a work of God’s art.
So this coming week, name your blockers and begin to work with them, remembering that as you continue to love the Lord your God, you will be working on loving those around you with an unexplained love.
Till next week,
Sister Theresita
