Gospel Reflection: October 5, 2025 - 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 5, 2025

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Luke 17:5-10

Two thoughts came to mind while reflecting on this Sunday’s Gospel passage. On one hand, most of us are familiar with the expression “everyone gets a trophy.” For some individuals, there is the expectation that simply showing up or being on a team (despite its record) seems to warrant recognition and praise, even if it is undeserved. On the other hand, there are those who selflessly serve out of love and dedication while not seeking recognition. Some are service workers, others are health care workers, and yet others are teachers and parents. They often receive no trophy or certificate but still serve despite an absence of gratitude.
The Gospel alludes to both. Jesus reminds us that being on His team includes obligations and responsibilities corresponding to our state in life. Should we expect to be rewarded for our fidelity to that which we promised? No. We will most likely not receive recognition or a trophy for doing what we are supposed to. Instead, we will receive the satisfaction of knowing we are faithful participants in God’s plan for our lives. That is reward enough!

God Bless!
