Wednesday Reflection - May 6, 2026

May 6, 2026

Dear Friends,

At a recent visit to an Episcopal Parish in a nearby town, I found a saying on their bulletin board that was very thought-provoking. It went like this:

Before Mass, Talk to God.

During Mass, Listen to God.

After Mass, Talk to each other.

Three simple lines but filled with so much Wisdom. The first thing that came to mind was the power of words, whether they be ours, God’s, or another’s words. I realized that words are a powerful gift we have been given. How do we use this gift? All of us, at one time or another, have experienced being spoken to harshly or in a negative way. Hopefully, you have also been graced by loving and uplifting words.

So, before Mass are our words, those of gratitude, praise, or perhaps a request. Actually, God can handle some complaining, too. During the Mass, do I listen to how much God loves me in the words of scripture and the prayers at the consecration? Am I being attentive, or am I creating a to-do list for the day? Now, after Mass can be another story. Have you ever tried to get out of a crowded church parking lot!? That’s not the words I want to hear. Do I greet folks, ask how they are, share my thoughts on the homily, or perhaps encourage someone who is having a hard time? Talk, Listen, and Talk.

What we say and how we say it can have a positive or negative effect on someone. Think about it: negative words can wound someone’s heart, with their effects lasting long after they’ve been spoken. Words can also cause division; we know how gossip and criticism can ruin someone’s life and reputation. Lastly, they can keep people from becoming the best version of themselves because they have been labeled.

The good news is that if we take the time to think before we speak, our words can inspire transformation in another. Positive words can bring the healing needed, reminding people of their dignity and the gift of being a Child of God. Loving words can challenge and guide people. Sometimes it takes one simple affirming sentence to bring a smile or glimmer of hope to another’s face and heart.

One of my sister’s favorite songs was “Speak Life” by TobyMac, so I encourage you to listen to it this week. Remember to ‘Speak Life’ to all those you encounter this week. I have a feeling you will experience some joy and peace as well. We need to ‘speak hope, love, and life.’

Till next week

Sister Theresita

PS God is so good. Last week, when I wrote this, I had no idea that Sister Danielle would send out a reflection on words on Monday. So I can share another song with you that speaks to the theme of words: Hawk Nelson’s "WORDS.” A great listen, enjoy!

Would you like our sisters to pray for your intentions? Send us a prayer request.
