Gospel Reflection: June 21, 2026

June 21, 2026

Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Gospel Reading: Matthew 10:26-33

I am amazed by Jesus’ advice to his disciples: he asks them three times not to be afraid and to fear no one, because everyone is a valuable, special person to God. And he reminds them that God has an everlasting love for each of them, knowing the secrets of their hearts and being so close to them that every hair on their head is numbered. Such closeness, presence, and everlasting love!

As Jesus speaks with them, I am sure he is well aware of the many difficult trials, tribulations, and fearful situations they will encounter in their lives. In these situations, they will be called to witness to a love that has grown and flourished deep within their hearts so that they can say Yes to God’s special love for each person created in the image and likeness of God.

And we have Jesus’ word that he will acknowledge us as his friends if we acknowledge his teachings of love, peace, and nonviolence in our daily struggles. Even if we suffer or face death, there is no need to worry or fear, for we are Jesus’ disciples, following in his footsteps of truth and love.

May we have the openness of heart, the courage and willingness to welcome God’s Spirit into our hearts and lives, day by day, in prayer and trust. Thus, we, too, like the disciples of Jesus, will live the gospel in joy and love, taking Jesus’ words to heart, not to fear the other, knowing that we are loved and cherished by a God whom we call Father.
