Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Gospel Reading: Matthew 10:37-42

When we first hear today’s reading from Matthew, we can be a little put off. Is Jesus really saying what we think he is saying? Well, yes and no. Ultimately, he is telling us that we must put him first – before any person or thing in our lives. That is the message. Putting God first is more than saying that we believe in Him; it is choosing each day to let His love guide our thoughts, words, and actions.

But here comes the twist. When God becomes the center of our lives, we begin to see others with greater patience, compassion, and understanding. Our faith becomes visible not only in prayer and worship, but also in how we treat the people around us.

Small acts of kindness may seem simple, but they can carry great meaning. A smile, an encouraging message, a listening ear, or a helping hand can remind someone that they are valued and not alone. These actions reflect God’s love because they show care without needing recognition or reward. Kindness becomes a quiet way to serve others and honor God.

The Gospel today challenges us – me - to be more aware of the opportunities each day to share God’s love. Sometimes I may look for big ways to make a difference, but that faithfulness can be found in ordinary moments. When I choose to be patient, helpful, and kind, I allow God’s love to flow through me and touch others in meaningful ways.

Ultimately, putting God first means living in a way that reflects God’s heart. Every kind word and thoughtful action can become an act of love, service, and worship. By practicing kindness in small ways, I can help create a ripple effect that brings encouragement, peace, and hope to others. I can change my little corner of the world, and these days, every corner of the world can use a little ray of sunshine.
