Gospel Reading: Matthew 15:21-28
The Gospel of the Canaanite woman reveals a faith that refuses to give up, even when God seems silent. She approaches Jesus with a desperate and trusting heart, pleading for the healing of her daughter. At first, Jesus doesn’t respond, and even the disciples want her sent away, but she doesn’t give up and continues to seek him.
Her persistence reminds us that prayer is not always answered in the way or at the moment we expect. There may be times when God seems distant or silent, when our prayers appear to go unheard. Like the Canaanite woman, we are invited to remain faithful and to trust that God sees the deepest desires of our hearts.
Jesus ultimately praises her. We recognize that her faith crosses boundaries of culture, history, and exclusion. She teaches us that genuine faith opens our hearts to God’s mercy and reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of Christ’s love.
As disciples, we are also challenged by the disciples’ desire to send her away. Are there people we would rather keep at a distance? Perhaps this Gospel can help us become people who welcome, listen, persevere in prayer, and trust deeply in the compassionate mercy of Jesus.
