It is hard to believe we are in the middle of August. For a long time, I was waiting for the Grief Retreat “Jesus Wept,” and now it is finished. The retreat ended on Friday with hugs and prayers whispered to all for safe journeys home.
I’m sharing parts of a poem we distributed on the last day of the retreat. The poem/prayer is entitled “The Thread I Cannot See,” by Martins. I am inclined to share this with you as I feel that at some point in all our lives we have said – ‘I’m hanging on by a thread!’ It begins like this:“
There are moments when my life feels suspended by a single thread.
Once, that frightened me. I imagined myself holding on with tired hands, afraid that one more disappointment, one more unanswered prayer, one more unexpected loss might finally make me let go. But lately, I have begun to see the thread differently. What if I am not hanging from it at all? What if I am being woven by it?
The author goes on to explain that perhaps God is doing the weaving and we are being woven into the tapestry of our life. Sometimes we forget that God sees our tapestry while we are concentrating on the knots. We can be missing the beauty of the tapestry. Sometimes we let the knots take hold of our spirit and life feels so difficult. It’s when we begin to trust the hands of the weaver that suddenly faith becomes less about holding on desperately...and more about allowing myself to be held.
We can allow God to design our tapestry and trust that His design is perhaps better than mine. I can hang on when I only see the thread, knowing God sees the tapestry. For now, that will be alright. Perhaps this week you want to check the thread you are holding on to and concentrate on the beautiful tapestry that is being woven just for you. Trust the weaver!
Till next week,
Sister Theresita
