Gospel Reading: Matthew 16:21-27
Today is my 60th birthday. As I turn the page to begin not only a new year, but a new decade on this journey of life, it is wonderfully joyous yet sobering at the same time. As I reflect on my life, I thank the good Lord for the many gifts He has given to me as well as the responsibilities that go with those gifts. Having served in various roles of leadership over the years, I think I‘ve come to understand that some of those gifts I bring to the table are also crosses. Using certain gifts is costly and brings suffering. Just like the prophet Jeremiah in today’s first reading, sometimes I shout at God: “You duped me!” However, as I pray through the struggle of using the gifts I’ve been given, I find myself humbled and more real, honest and vulnerable. In these times, I am closer to the heart of Jesus than I can ask or imagine” And my friends, that is enough for me! Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow where He leads! And joy will follow you!
