God sees us
The parable that Jesus shares this Sunday challenges our tendency to measure life by comparison: Who worked harder? Who deserves more? Jesus reminds us that the Kingdom of God does not operate according to our rules; it is rooted in the astonishing generosity of God.
The landowner continues to go out throughout the day, searching for those who are still waiting. Perhaps the most moving words come from the laborers hired at the final hour: “Because no one has hired us.” They have been overlooked and left behind, yet the landowner sees them, calls them, and gives them a place in his vineyard. In the same way, God never stops seeking us. No matter how late we may think it is, his invitation remains: “You too go into my vineyard.”
The challenge comes when those who arrived first begin comparing themselves with those who came last. Their gratitude becomes resentment. The landowner’s question, “Are you envious because I am generous?” is worth bringing to prayer. Can we rejoice when God is generous to others, even when we think they deserve less? God’s generosity isn’t the problem – we are.
Jesus invites us to stop keeping score and instead become grateful — for the grace we have received, for the opportunity to serve, and for a God whose generosity is always greater than our calculations.
