Gospel Reading: Matthew 21:28-32
Really, Jesus: “Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before...” some of us? (Matthew 21). So are You telling us there is room for all to celebrate in the beyond? If I truly believed Your words, maybe I would not be as hard on myself when I don’t always meet my own expectations. And, if that were so, perhaps, too, I would not be so judgmental about the actions of those I encounter. Please help me to rely on your Ever-present Mercy – “Remember your mercies, O Lord” (Psalm 25) as I do my best (and also assume that others are doing theirs).
In one of her books (Radical Optimism), Dr. Beatrice Bruteau states: “I propose instead that sin originates in a lack of sufficient believable unconditional love. And this lack forms a chain.” This reflection has helped me in my own daily examen, as have the thoughts of another spiritual writer, Anthony de Mello, S.J., who points out that, at times, what is perceived as sin can reflect a person’s unawareness and/or ignorance. He counsels us not to judge others, since we can never know what conditioning, illusions, or attachments have affected their actions.
“My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27).
