We celebrate the Blessed Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, along with many other familiar saints, including St. Therese of Lisieux, the Guardian Angels, St. Francis of Assisi. St. Faustina, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Luke, Pope St. John Paul II, and Saints Simon and Jude celebrated this month. We are truly blessed with so many reminders of God’s goodness. Happy celebrating!
George Bernard Shaw said once, “The only man I know who behaves sensibly is my tailor; he takes my measurements anew each time he sees me. The rest go on with their old measurements and expect me to fit in.” I’m sure you’ve heard this one: “You haven’t changed a bit.” I’m not sure that’s a compliment.
I was happy to come across this because we may be doing something that doesn’t fit anymore, yet we keep struggling with the situation. New measurements are needed. We have hopefully grown in wisdom and holiness. Thinking that tomorrow will be the same as today is not a blessed way to live. God created us to live life to the fullest, and so our measurements, life, and spirituality need to be open to change. I like the image of measurements because we are constantly changing, and it is only fair to recognize the growth.
Growth may cause pain, but when we come out on the other side, we can move forward differently, with new measurements. Wisely, Robert Frost wrote, “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. IT GOES ON!” Life is a process, and it shapes who we are as long as we are willing to change and measure where we are in the here and now. As we grow, we need to let go of what was and embrace who we’re becoming. Sometimes that can be scary.
I suggest you take the time to retake your measurements this week and notice where changes have occurred. If you were getting a new dress or suit, would your measurements be the same as, say, 10 years ago? Change will happen whether we like it or not. Know that it can be very positive, for we are meant to grow in God’s Wisdom and Grace. Get those tape measures out and be gentle with yourself, for God loves you as you are now. God looks forward to our growth.
Till next week,
