Scripture Reflection: January 14, 2024 – 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 13, 2024

1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19
1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17-20
Jn 1:35-42

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening!” (1Samuel 3:3b-10, 19)

Like Samuel, we want to listen to the Lord. But do we – always? So many daily matters take our attention away from the One who truly matters. Listening to what Paul says to the Corinthians (1Cor. 13c-15a, 17-20) that our “body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,” should encourage us to give our whole selves over to do the Father’s will.

Many times during the day, we can offer ourselves to others by simply listening to what they have to share. We many not be able to offer solutions to their problems but we can pray for them and be a “listening presence.”

If we can testify to ourselves and others as Andrew and Peter did in today’s Gospel from John (1:35-42), “We have found the Messiah: Jesus Christ, who brings us truth and grace,” then how can we not shout it from the rooftops?

Truth and grace – what more do we need? Truth and grace will be the vital components in our journey to the Father – the One who is so very fond of us. We have been given the truth to know what is right and the grace to enable us to do what is right. The Trinity has set us on this right path all because we have freely responded, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
